That night, we drove along the
Ninety-Mile Beach,
which was amazingly dark and scary to drive on (the fact that I knew there
was essentially water on both sides of the road didn't help me much :),
hoping for some place to stop. There were little camping sites, and a lot
of dark foliage, but otherwise I could barely see the road in front of
me. We stopped at a beach for a few minutes, where Christian kindly
decided to scare me with ideas of snakes, and listened to the surf for a
while. (Ok, Christian watched it, but I couldn't see anything, which
should give some idea of why I didn't want to be driving!)
We drove further, and finally hit
Golden
Beach.
There was a little take-away place where we got some strange Hawaiian
sandwiches and some fries, and entertained the locals. We then parked the
car in the parking lot of the town hall and tried to get some sleep. Keep
in mind that we were there in winter; we thought that two big people in
such a small car would generate enough heat to keep us both warm, but I
had to keep starting the car and turning on the heat during the night
because we were freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing!!!! All I remember was
having very cold toes, and being irritated by a bug that had gotten in the
car and liked my ear a lot, but I think both of us managed a couple of
hours of sleep in there somewhere... The sunrise the next morning, though,
was worth the cold :)
So... anyhow... the next day got up and went to Paradise Beach, and
drove on to Gelantipy. But more about that in the next two picture
sets...
